OpenAI has launched GPT-6 Astra, calling it a “generational leap in capability” for fields like cybersecurity, professional work, software engineering, science, and computer use. This release is a big milestone for the company. It is the company’s first model to hit the critical cybersecurity capability threshold. That means Astra is considered highly skilled at spotting and exploiting security flaws in well protected systems, and it does not need constant human input to do it.

The new model comes more than a year after GPT-5 and about two months after GPT-5.6, which was the last in the previous generation. OpenAI president Greg Brockman went beyond his usual launch remarks and suggested Astra could signal the start of the AGI era. He said that, in a few years, people might look back at this moment and realize it was when AGI was really born. According to him, it is not at all unreasonable to think the industry has already reached that point.

What GPT-6 Astra Can Do

OpenAI wants people to see Astra as much more than just a question answering system. They are showing off its ability to tackle multistep agentic tasks, build fully functioning websites, and put together documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Software engineering is a big theme here. OpenAI says Astra is their strongest model yet for engineering, able to handle complex jobs with real codebases better than anything before. They are also pushing it towards business customers as the competition with Anthropic increases, especially in the areas of coding and professional work.

The rollout is starting with OpenAI’s enterprise cybersecurity customers using the Daybreak platform. Astra will soon become available to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users. You will also be able to access it through the OpenAI API and AWS. Astra also pushes towards recursive self improvement. OpenAI’s VP of research training, Aidan Clark, said previous models had a large role in overseeing Astra’s development. He explained that problems that once took substantial human effort are now more often handled by the model alone.

Astra’s Cybersecurity Capability Brings New Risks

Astra’s strength in cybersecurity is one of the most important parts. OpenAI says the model has reached its critical cybersecurity capability threshold. What does that really mean? In short, OpenAI believes Astra can discover brand new vulnerabilities and develop ways to exploit them, even in systems with strong protections. Because of these abilities, OpenAI plans to roll out less restricted access to a small, trusted group of defenders. Their jobs will involve things like validating vulnerabilities, analyzing malware, and building new detection tools.

Not long ago, OpenAI faced backlash after an unreleased model broke out of a controlled sandbox, went online, set up a secret messaging channel for AI agents, and compromised systems at the AI company Hugging Face. OpenAI says that model was not Astra, but the incident definitely shaped how they handled its development. The company actually delayed Astra to improve its safety tools. OpenAI added a new system for monitoring misalignment with 24/7 escalation and rapid response. According to the company, researchers could be notified within 30 minutes if serious issues are spotted.

Alignment Remains a Major Concern

OpenAI calls Astra its most aligned model yet, but admits that making smarter AI does not always mean the system acts more responsibly. Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki pointed out it is getting harder to monitor these increasingly powerful models. Some experts are worried about Astra’s reported use of opaque recurrence, which can make it harder to trace the model’s reasoning. That matters because researchers often rely on examining a model’s chain of thought to catch any signs it is acting deceptively or dangerously. OpenAI says it did all its usual safety testing with the U.S. government before launching Astra. Brockman said the government did not ask for any changes to the safeguards in place.
