SoftBank and NVIDIA Join Forces to Revolutionize Mobile Networks with AI

Tokyo, November 13, 2024 – SoftBank Corp. has today provided an update on its AI-RAN technology that will change the mobile network infrastructure landscape. The company presented various breakthrough technologies, including a virtual Radio Access Network intended for commercial use and built on NVIDIA’s GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip.

In the same breath, the report highlights three milestones – the successful deployment of a highly efficient vRAN, creation of a sophisticated orchestrator to manage integrated vRAN and AI, and the debut of a full-fledged AI RAN- AITRAS that is geared towards both local and foreign telcos.

“The AI-RAN concept represents our vision for next-generation mobile networks that will support a society coexisting with AI,” said Junichi Miyakawa, President & CEO of SoftBank Corp., during the announcement ceremony with NVIDIA.

This milestone extends SoftBank’s early AI-RAN proposal from the year 2023, reflecting astonishing success in changing the landscape from what could be to what is being implemented. This new platform is a major innovation in telecommunication technology since it integrates artificial intelligence with the conventional telecommunication system.

“This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the evolution of telecommunications infrastructure,” stated Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA, highlighting the importance of the partnership. “The integration of our GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip with SoftBank’s innovative AI-RAN platform will help reshape the future of mobile networks.”

The AITRAS solution is striking especially as it is a commercial-ready technology of the AI-RAN, which is fitted for use within the existing network infrastructure of SoftBank and other telecom service providers across the globe. Such a development sets SoftBank at the very heart of the telecommunications advancements brought about by artificial intelligence, potentially transforming how mobile networks operate and perform in the AI era.
