NVIDIA Reportedly in Talks to Finance OpenAI’s $500B Data Centre

The artificial intelligence spectrum is not limited to efficiency, but also about possessing the infrastructure. According to a Wall Street Journal report, NVIDIA is in talks to provide $250 billion in financing guarantees for OpenAI to build a massive data center project. If the deal is successful, it would demonstrate a major shift in the AI environment, with OpenAI moving away from conventional rented cloud model, while NVIDIA boosts its hold on the infrastructure that pushes the industry. 

The alleged campus is expected to cost more than $500 billion in total, making it one of the biggest AI infrastructure projects ever seen. While Nvidia’s reported guarantee would cover the data center lease and debt financing, the chipmaker is also in talks financing OpenAI’s chip purchases worth up to $50 billion. Altogether, the conversation demonstrates how AI companies are starting to fund infrastructure on a magnitude associated with utilities.

Why Is OpenAI Moving Beyond the Rented-Cloud Model?

According to the report, OpenAI is in talks to lease capacity at the site whose first phase is expected to provide around 800 megawatts of power by 2028, before expanding into a 10-gigawatt AI campus.

The shift also shows a broader trend across the AI market. Instead of buying compute from hyperscalers, AI developers are looking for a way to control infrastructure, treating data centers as strategic assets.

The change is also talking about strategic independence. As frontier AI models grow and become more compute intensive, depending on third-party cloud providers can limit their functioning, deployment, and training. Compute is becoming a distinct advantage in itself rather than an operational expense.
