Is Claude Down? Anthropic Reports Errors Across Models

[UPDATE: At the time of writing this article, all said errors have been resolved by Anthropic, and the models are now reported to be operational.]

Claude users faced elevated errors on August 24 as several Anthropic models and services returned failures. Anthropic’s status page logged the incident at 05:06 UTC on August 24. The status reached the Identified stage at 05:27 UTC, though the company has not disclosed the cause or a restoration time.

The errors affected claude.ai, the Claude API, Claude Code and Claude Cowork. Claude Console and Claude for Government stayed operational. Anthropic named Claude Mythos 5, Claude Fable 5, Claude Opus 5 and Claude Opus 4.8 in its update. Verify against the live status page, since earlier wording read “and other Claude models.” Downdetector logged a rise in reports, with more than 1,300 in the US and over 180 in India during the window. Verify both figures against the live page.

How to Check if Claude is Down

If Claude returns errors or fails to respond, users can check Anthropic’s status page at status.claude.com, and verify if the servers are down from the organisation’s end.

Downdetector, which tracks user reports in real time, showed the first warnings around 10:00 AM India time. About 55% of reported problems were with Claude Code, 21% with Claude Chat, and 14% with the app.

Users can also check Reddit and X for similar reports, which help distinguish a broad outage from a local connection or account problem from that of Anthropic’s end.

Claude Code Users Hit Hardest by Errors

On Reddit, members of the Anthropic community talked about running into “529 overloaded” errors, which means some people were not able to use Claude normally because the requests were being rejected as the service was overloaded.

The outage really affected Claude Code users, with one person saying their process, which was already running for nine hours, had been interrupted. For users working on coding projects that take hours, this kind of interruption does more damage than a short failure in a regular chat.

Others also described repeated errors and failed attempts to use Claude’s services. On X, users were having similar conversations, sharing API error 429 messages and pointing to server-side issues.

Anthropic’s status history lists several August incidents. These include degraded performance on August 20, Opus 5 and Haiku 4.5 problems on August 19, a multi-model issue on August 18, and disruptions on August 16, 14, 7 and 6, with August 6 logged as a major outage. Earlier this year, Anthropic had confirmed another outage in March, reflecting rather poorly on the AI company.

Anthropic Reportedly Prepares for a “Record-Breaking” IPO

Anthropic is also reportedly planning to make its first major move in the public market, as sources say the company is preparing for an initial public offering. People familiar with discussions between the company’s bankers and potential investors say Anthropic could aim to raise more than $100 billion, and the IPO could push its valuation up to $2 trillion. The company filed to go public in June and is expected to reveal its prospectus in the next few weeks. If everything goes according to the plan, this IPO could become the biggest public offering ever, surpassing SpaceX, which went public in June with a $1.77 trillion valuation and raised $85.7 billion.

Anthropic was valued at $900 billion in a private fundraising round earlier this year and recently crossed $65 billion in annualized revenue, which is way up from $9 billion at the end of last year. Still, investors are questioning if Anthropic can keep up its premium pricing against cheaper competitors, and whether it can secure enough computing power to keep up with growing demand.

The recent outage could very well raises concerns about Anthropic’s service reliability as the company moves towards the IPO. Investors are likely to pay close attention to whether Anthropic can keep its services stable while both demand and valuation continue to grow.
