Key Highlights:
- Perplexity’s Comet AI browser is coming to Android, with early invites now rolling out to select users for testing.
- Comet offers deep Perplexity AI integration on both macOS and Windows, offering a cleaner, smarter, and agentic browsing experience.
- Despite Chrome’s 73% market dominance, Comet and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas have the potential to eat up some of its market share.
It has been quite some time since Perplexity launched the Comet AI browser. For those unaware, it is an AI-powered browser that lets you rethink how you explore the web. As of now, there are plenty of AI browsers in the market trying to do similar things like Comet. More recently, OpenAI also jumped into the bandwagon with its AI browser called ChatGPT Atlas.
Comet’s Android early invite is rolling out now
While OpenAI’s offering is still limited to macOS users for testing, Perplexity has made its AI browser available for both macOS and Windows starting last month. To catch you up, the browser was previously available only for Perplexity Max on both platforms. If you’ve been waiting for the Comet AI browser, there’s some good news for you.

Perplexity has started sending invites to select Android users for early access to the Comet AI browser. Those invitees can test the mobile version ahead of the wider rollout. The news comes via Perplexity’s CEO Aravind Srinivas on X. According to his post, the company will first send invites for “Pro/Max users” and to those who frequently use Perplexity on their Android device.
AI browsers are new to the mobile platform, but Perplexity is taking a big bet. If you are interested in trying the Android version of the AI browser, you must register for early access through the Google Play Store or directly on Comet’s official site. Again, the invites won’t be there for everyone, so watch out for a confirmation email.

What’s browsing experience with Comet like on desktop
For the uninitiated, the desktop version of the Comet browser has been getting a lot of attention lately. And most of those efforts are being pushed to attract Chrome users at large. That’s something Microsoft has been doing for Edge, nudging users to try Edge or stay on its browser. If you haven’t used Comet, you may have questions about what’s so special about it, right?
Well, I have tried Comet and have used it regularly ever since it was made available for free to Windows users. And I can say that I’m quite impressed by the cleaner design and how deeply it is integrated with the Perplexity AI. The browser comes with Perplexity Search as your default search engine, where every query is redirected to Perplexity AI. If you’re someone who prefers to have Google or Bing as your preferred search engine, you can always opt for them from inside the browser’s settings.
Perplexity also recently took Comet to the next level after unveiling the updated version of Comet Assistant, positioning it as a true agentic browser. You can now work across multiple tabs, plan travel, get assistance for job searches, and even compare and shop for products in real time.
Chrome still at top, but AI browsers have potential
Although it’s unclear when the wider rollout would begin, earlier today, Perplexity said that the invite-only rollout has shown positive results. According to StatCounter, Chrome currently holds a market share of nearly 73 percent. Yes, it’s not easy for Perplexity to beat Chrome in the browser space. But by making the browsing experience smarter than ever, Comet is trying to steal some of the market share.
While it’s still early days for Comet, the possibilities are immense. And the same goes for OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas. It will be interesting to see how the browser market looks like in a year or so, but at this point, Chrome is sitting at the top, and with regular AI improvements, Google has all its plans to keep it up there.
