YouTube Creators Get Multi-language Audio Dubbing after 2-year test

YouTube multi-language audio feature is rolling out to creators.

Key Highlights

  • Google has finally rolled out Multi-language Audio feature for its YouTube Creators.
  • The feature was initially being tested in pilot with creators like MrBeast, Mark Rober, and chef Jamie Oliver.
  • The company is also reportedly testing multi-language thumbnails with select creators.

Google’s video streaming platform YouTube had launched yet another major feature for its creators – the multi-language audio feature. Introduced first in 2023, with a select handful of creators such as MrBeast, Mark Rober, and chef Jamie Oliver, the feature will now be available for all creators after 2 years of test pilot.

The new multi-language audio feature lets viewers watch videos dubbed in their native language. This lifts up one of the major challenge in making content accessible – ‘the language barrier.’ For creators this feature lets their content and channel have a global reach and find newer audience.

How Multi-language Audio Feature Works for Creators

Back in 2023, YouTube introduced an AI powered dubbing tool called Aloud. This is the same tool is responsible for the multi-language audio feature. How so? Using the AI tool, Google made UI changes to enable viewer to select their desired audio. But that’s not what a creator goes through.

To get started with the multi-language audio feature, interested users need to follow these steps –

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio on your computer.
  2. From the left menu, select Languages.
  3. Click the video that you’d like to edit.
  4. Click Add Language and select your language.
  5. Next to ‘Dub’, click Add.
  6. Click Select file.
  7. Choose which file to upload. Files must be in a supported audio-only file format and roughly the same length as your video.
  8. Click Publish when you’re ready to upload your audio track.

You can delete any multi-language audio track you have added previously and reiterate the steps to add as you require. Youtube also warned that the copyrighted content in the secondary audio track is different from the original audio, the file may be removed.

Google shared that this feature has proved to be extremely useful during its pilot program. One of the popular creators, Mr. Beast was also roped in to test this feature on his most viewed videos. He later shared in a Creator Studio video how he felt about the feature.

According to the tech giant, the testing saw over 25% of the creators watch time come directly from views in the video’s non-primary language. Another creator, Chef Nick DiGiovanni was also part of the testing group and shared about the feature’s impact on his channel.

The feature is now live, and will roll out globally to users in coming weeks.

Something More Is Coming to YouTube, but What?

In its official blog, the streaming platform also shared that they’re also working on ‘Multi-language Thumbnails’ feature. Ritz Campbell, Product Manager at YouTube said –

We’ve even begun piloting multi-language thumbnails with a select group of creators, giving them the opportunity to add localized thumbnails based off of viewers’ selected language.

According to a report by TechCrunch, select creators have already begun customizing thumbnails to display text in other languages. This would add more momentum to YouTube’s existing plan of helping its creators go ‘global.’ These customizable thumbnails are designed in such a way that texts in it match the viewers’ preferred languages.

Recently the California based tech-giant also made headlines after it released a Veo-3 update, letting creators make AI powered videos in 9:16 format. Veo-3 had previously made its integrated debut in Google Photos, letting users generate 4-second video highlights from images.
