Key Highlights:
- Gmail is getting Gemini-powered AI Overviews that instantly summarize long email threads and pull answers from your inbox on demand.
- Google is also upgrading email writing with smarter Suggested Replies, Help Me Write for everyone, and advanced proofreading for AI plan subscribers.
- A new AI Inbox will show what actually matters to you by prioritizing bills, reminders, and important contacts, while inbox clutter sits in the background.
When we think of emails, Gmail instantly pops up in everyone’s head, and rightly so. It is the most used email service, which Google says now has over 3 billion daily users. Putting it simply, volume is at an all-time high. With thousands of emails cluttering our inboxes, it’s hard to find a single email or narrow down a search almost instantly.
Gemini is officially coming to Gmail to redefine emailing
Well, Google believes it has an answer—and possibly the best one. It’s none other than Gemini. Yes, Gmail is embracing AI, as Google today announced one of the biggest AI updates for the world’s most used email service. With this update, Gemini sits right inside Gmail as a proactive inbox assistant.
AI Overviews, which you might know from Google Search results, are now headed to Gmail. So, what’s the purpose, you may ask? Gemini-powered Gmail can now automatically summarize your conversations, cutting the hassle of scanning through long email chains or relying on advanced search tricks. You simply open a thread with dozens of replies, and Gemini summarizes it into a crisp snapshot with all the key pointers, decisions, and context.
More importantly, Gmail now allows you to ask your inbox questions using natural language. You no longer need to remember keywords or dates. You can ask something like, “Who quoted me for the bathroom renovation last year?” and Gemini scans your emails, extracts the relevant information, and provides a direct, quick answer. AI Overviews for conversation summaries are rolling out today for free to everyone. However, inbox Q&A is reserved for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

AI writing tools get an upgrade, too
Apart from AI summaries, Google is also expanding its AI writing tools. Help Me Write is now available to everyone, allowing you to draft or improve emails with AI assistance. Suggested Replies are also getting attention in this update, evolving beyond basic Smart Replies. Gemini can now draft replies using conversation context that matches your tone and writing style. Proofreading adds another layer, offering advanced grammar, tone, and clarity checks before you hit send. It’s limited to AI Pro and Ultra plans, but the rest of the writing tools are free.

Next month, Help Me Write will get even better personalization, allowing it to pull in context from other Google apps. Another major update comes in the form of AI Inbox. As of now, Gmail shows emails in chronological order, but that’s going to change soon. Gmail will begin highlighting what actually matters. Bills, reminders, and messages from frequent contacts will appear at the top of your inbox, while low-priority emails sit quietly in the background. Google says this process happens securely and privately. The company will start testing the feature with trusted testers before rolling it out more broadly later this year.

All of these features are powered by Gemini 3 and begin rolling out today in the U.S., starting with English. More languages and regions are coming soon. All that said, Gmail isn’t just getting smarter—Google is looking to redefine what an inbox is supposed to do.
