According to the latest report, OlimpIA, an AI-based chatbot, is offering legal and emotional support to victims of digital sexual violence across Latin America. Developed in Mexico by AuraChat.Ai, the chatbot operates through WhatsApp and provides assistance in multiple languages, which has helped over 8,000 victims since its launch.
OlimpIA is inspired by the struggles of Olimpia Coral from Mexico and Isabella Nuques from Ecuador. Both women became victims of online sexual violence in 2013 when their private images were shared without consent. When they sought legal action, authorities dismissed their cases, arguing that digital crimes were not “real”. Determined to bring change, they advocated for legal reforms. This initiative resulted in the approval of digital violence laws in their respective countries.
Mexico passed the “Ley Olimpia” nationwide in 2021, which imposes prison sentences of up to six years for offenders. Ecuador followed with a similar law, which punishes digital violence with up to 16 years in prison. Other Latin American nations, including Argentina, Chile, and Panama, have adopted similar regulations.
Recognizing the need for accessible support, Coral’s activist group partnered with AuraChat.Ai to create OlimpIA. The chatbot expands access to legal aid, mental health support, and security tools for victims. Using AI models trained by lawyers, psychologists, and digital defenders, it detects emotional distress and provides crisis intervention.
While currently available through WhatsApp, developers plan to make OlimpIA accessible without the Internet, which allows phone-based consultations in remote areas. Further updates will also integrate sign language and Indigenous languages to reach a wider audience.
OlimpIA has been recognized globally, earning a spot among the 50 most innovative projects at the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in Paris. As digital violence continues to rise, AI-based initiatives like OlimpIA offer crucial support to victims, which ensures they are heard and protected.
