UAE Leaders Meet Elon Musk in Abu Dhabi to Discuss AI and Technology

Countries in the Middle East are increasingly working to bolster plans for future innovations in advanced technology, AI, and other areas. One such example is the UAE. The country is partnering with some of the top tech giants from the U.S., like Microsoft and OpenAI, to make it more efficient in the AI sector.

More recently, Microsoft announced $15.2 billion investment in the UAE to expand its AI footprint in the country. That’s not all; the company is also aiming to build trust and make people aware of AI and turn the UAE into an AI-ready nation. Speaking of AI, Open has also confirmed that it now fully supports data residency in the UAE. As part of the plan, the company now allows enterprises to store ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, and API data locally for better compliance.

Elon Musk meets UAE leadership to discuss AI and advanced technologies

In a similar effort, the UAE’s President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan recently met Elon Musk in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. According to the Emirates News Agency, Wam, Musk and the UAE’s President discussed recent developments in advanced technology and AI. The meeting also explored the importance of collaboration, partnerships, and knowledge exchange. 

Per the report, several senior leaders were present in the high-profile meeting. Here’s the list:

  • Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
  • Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense.
  • Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology Council.

Earlier in the day, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed shared images on social media showing him hosting Musk in Dubai. The photos captured moments from a meeting as well as a drive through the city, offering a glimpse into the informal side of the visit. In a post accompanying the images, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed said he enjoyed a “multifaceted discussion” with Musk.

Discussions around sustainable development and forward-looking policies

The Dubai Media Office said the meeting in Dubai took place in Nad Al Sheba, where conversations focused on a sustainable development vision aimed at addressing global challenges while shaping a future built on progress and shared prosperity.

In the meeting, leaders also talked about several factors that have helped position the UAE as one of the go-to destinations for innovation. No wonder the country has already announced forward-looking policies, robust digital infrastructure, and a willingness to embrace emerging technologies at scale. Musk, in return, praised the country’s long-term vision and the strides it has made in technology and innovation.

The meetings come at a time when many countries around the world are exploring the future of AI, space exploration, and advanced technologies. Speaking in the context of the UAE, engaging directly with prominent figures like Elon Musk shows the country’s intent to stay involved in shaping how these technologies evolve and how they impact the citizens of the country. For those unaware, a recent Microsoft AI diffusion report ranked the UAE at the top in terms of AI adoption, with 59.4% of its workforce using AI in daily workflows.
