Spotify’s new ‘Prompted Playlists’ feature curates highly-personalized playlists for you using AI

Prompted Playlists Spotify

Key Highlights:

  • Spotify is testing a new “Prompted Playlists” feature in Beta that lets Premium users create highly personalized playlists using long, detailed prompts.
  • The feature analyzes your entire listening history, not just recent activity, and supports world-knowledge-based requests for best possible recommendation.
  • Users can control refresh frequency (daily or weekly), edit prompts anytime, and get context on why each song appears in the playlist.

Spotify isn’t shying away from bringing new AI features to its platform. The music-streaming giant has now announced a new feature that gives users more control over the service’s algorithm.

Prompted Playlists is an evolved version of Spotify’s AI Playlists

Well… that’s how Spotify is positioning the launch of its new “Prompted Playlists” feature. So, what’s new feature all about? Basically, it allows you to describe what you want to hear in a personalized playlist, which Spotify says ofders “full arc of your taste.”

In simple words, Spotify says the feature doesn’t just focus on what you have been liking these days. The feature can also tap into your entire listening history from day one. According to Spotify, that’s what differentiates it from other playlists.

The said feature will initially be available to Spotify Premium subscribers in New Zealand. As of now, the company is testing the beta, and us only available in English. Spotify says the feature will evolve before expanding to other markets.

Longer prompts and highly-personalized playlists

To catch you up, Spotify already has an existing AI Playlists option introduced last year, which also works through written prompts. However, Prompted Playlists is one step up than that. The new feature also allows you to request what you want through written prompts, but now you can write much longer, more specific instructions. This is possible because the feature factors in world knowledge to curate the playlist.

It’s also worth noting that you can schedule how often the playlist refreshes or dive back into your listening history. For example, Spotify says you can ask for something like “music from top artists from the last five years,” then add a follow-up request, and the AI will generate something new. The same goes for longer prompts: you can ask the feature to follow a specific tempo, mood, or duration — anything that matches your taste.

As mentioned earlier, you can continue updating the prompts to make the playlist even more specific. You can also choose how often the playlist updates, with daily or weekly refresh options. The playlist curated for you will include a description and context to explain why you’re getting those recommendations. You’ll also get a set of suggested prompts to help you get started.
