With OpenAI and Spotify together, music discovery just became conversational. The newly launched Spotify app integration in ChatGPT changes the user experience, creation of playlists, and music discovery, just by conversing. This is not any other tech integration; it is a paradigm shift in the way we interact with our favourite streaming platform, making personalized music recommendations as easy as engaging in a conversation.
Speaking about the integration, Sten Garmark, SVP, Global Head of Consumer Experience at Spotify, said, “Spotify’s vision has always been to be everywhere you are. By bringing Spotify into ChatGPT, we’re creating a powerful new way for fans to connect with the artists and creators they love conversationally, whenever inspiration strikes.”
How ChatGPT Integration Really Works?
Initiating the process is just so easy. Begin any conversation on ChatGPT, embedding the mention of Spotify within your prompt: something like, “Spotify, create a playlist for my Friday party.” When you first use these instructions, ChatGPT will require you to connect to Spotify for one-time authorization. Such a connection is completely opt-in and reversible at any moment; you can disconnect without jeopardizing the state of your Spotify account.
Once the connection is established, ask for particular songs, artists, albums, playlists, or podcast episodes by name. Or ask for recommendations depending on the mood, theme, or topic. This is the lovely thing about natural language processing, as no special commands are needed. When a track buried deep in ChatGPT is clicked, it immediately opens in the Spotify app for instant listening.
Context-Aware Recommendations
As far as this integration is concerned, it understands its conversational context. Planning a road trip in ChatGPT? Seamlessly ask Spotify to make the ideal driving soundtrack for you, without ever leaving the app. Talking about a dinner party? Ask it for some background music that fits the mood of your evening, all in the same conversation thread.
Adding specific details to your requests will yield the best results. For a music request, provide the genre, mood, or artist you have in mind. For podcasts, specify the subject or a particular host. The technology is really advanced, but both companies agree on one thing that this is still the “early days” and as the companies continue on further refinements, this experience will only grow.
Free vs. Premium Experience
Free users can access Spotify’s huge catalog of pre-curated playlists, which includes algorithmically generated favorites like Discover Weekly and New Music Friday, as well as thousands of editorially curated playlists for just about every genre and mood imaginable.
Premium subscribers possess much more powerful abilities. Want “90s alternative rock mixed with modern indie, excluding mainstream tracks, with a melancholic but hopeful vibe”? Premium users can make these nuanced requests and receive fully personalized track selections built on the spot.
Privacy and Artist Protection
Spotify has never been one to shy away from talking about content protections. No music, podcasts, or any audiovisual content shall be ferried across to OpenAI for training AI. Thus, the artists’ and creators’ work continues to be safeguarded under existing licensing agreements. Before the first connection is made, ChatGPT will prompt users so that it is clear what information can be shared. Users retain total control and may disconnect at any time via their settings.

Part of a Larger Ecosystem
The Spotify integration is joining an increasingly extensive suite of ChatGPT apps that also include Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, and Zillow, with a further eleven partners to join later this year. These apps work with ChatGPT’s new Apps SDK, built on the Model Context Protocol, an open standard that facilitates conversational app experiences.
Apps in ChatGPT are starting to roll out today to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users outside of the EU.

For developers, the opportunity is significant: reaching over 800 million ChatGPT users at contextually relevant moments. OpenAI has made the Apps SDK available as open source, and will start accepting app submissions later this year; details on monetization will be announced soon.
Global Availability
The Spotify app for ChatGPT was launched on 6 October 2025, made available immediately for all logged-in users across 145 countries in English. The integration runs via web browsers and iOS/Android mobile apps, granting accessibility across devices.
