OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Go to Indonesia After Doubling India Subscriber Base

OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Go

Key Highlights

  • OpenAI launches ChatGPT Go in Indonesia at Rp75,000 ($4.50/month) after a sell-out launch in India
  • India subscribers have more than doubled in number since August 2025, when ChatGPT Go was launched, making it OpenAI’s largest market
  • The plan directly competes with Google’s AI Plus plan, launched earlier this month in Indonesia at a similar price point.
  • The move follows the $100 billion commitment from NVIDIA, bringing the number of renowned investors alongside Microsoft and SoftBank.

OpenAI on Tuesday declared the rollout of the inexpensive ChatGPT Go subscription plan to Indonesia, marking the company’s push into price-sensitive emerging markets. At Rp75,000 ($4.50) per month, the mid-tier plan represents an attempt by OpenAI to capture cost-conscious users and vie head-to-head against Google’s expanding AI services in Southeast Asia.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Go Success In India and Indonesian Expansion

Following great achievements for ChatGPT Go in India, Nick Turley, ChatGPT head, said that the number of users paying in India has more than doubled since the initiation of the plan, thus making India OpenAI’s biggest user base. Other reports suggest that India now has around a 13.5% share of global monthly active users of ChatGPT, while rivaling the U.S. for being the second-largest market for the company.

This sudden uprising manifested the power behind customized price schemes in emerging markets. Positioned nicely between the free version OpenAI offers and the $20 per month premium version, ChatGPT Plus, the ChatGPT Go plan gives 10 times the number of queries allowed for sending, generating images, and uploading files than is available in the free version.

On X, Nick Turley said, “We just launched ChatGPT Go in Indonesia! For only Rp75.000 per month, subscribers get 10× higher message limits, 10× more image generations, 10× more file uploads, and double the memory compared to our free plan.”

What’s New in Indonesian ChatGPT Go

The ChatGPT Go plan, in fact, offers quite some improvements over the most basic free version, giving users expanded messaging limits and image generation capabilities with double the memory capacity so that ChatGPT can remember previous conversations a lot better and provide much more personalized responses when referred to again over time.

Turley stated that Indonesia is already amongst ChatGPT’s “top five markets by weekly active users,” hence being a natural choice for the affordable plan’s roll-out there. The country’s large population of tech-savvy users, combined with price sensitivity, creates an ideal market for OpenAI’s mid-tier offering. But as such, no specific market based feature has been rolled out or mentioned.

Google Vs OpenAI – The More Affordable Option

OpenAI’s Indonesia release puts them in direct competition with Google in the country, since the tech giant launched its AI Plus subscription plan in Indonesia earlier this month, which is also in the same price range. Google’s offering provides access to the Gemini 2.5 Pro chatbot alongside creative tools, including Flow, Whisk, and Veo 3 Fast for image and video creation.

The AI Plus plan enhances the productivity suite from Gmail, Docs, and Sheets by throwing in 200GB cloud storage, along with some enhanced features for a NotebookLM research assistant. This comprehensive approach contrasts with OpenAI’s focused chatbot experience, setting up a compelling battle for market share in Indonesia’s growing AI user base.

The competition is an echo of the overall trend in the AI market worldwide, where each company is trying hard to become the dominant player in the emerging key market, using localized pricing, regional features, and so forth.

Strategic Investments and Market Positioning

The expansion of OpenAI comes with huge funding, including a recent commitment of $100 billion investment from NVIDIA Corporation, thereby joining the ranks of already well-established investors, Microsoft Corporation, and SoftBank Group. This giant investment would serve as enabling grounds for OpenAI to aggressively push deeper expansion into international markets, with the simultaneous creation of ankle-breaking AI model improvements.

The company’s approach toward emerging markets would represent another strategic way of pursuing volume growth in price-sensitive regions rather than simply charging premium prices in developed markets. An acknowledgment of the fact that AI adoption worldwide will majorly hinge on affordability and accessibility.
