The AI race is heating up, thanks to Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, who seem to be battling it out with model after model. If you’re unaware, Google recently launched the Gemini 3 Pro, its most advanced model to date. Results show that it beats OpenAI’s best model in multiple benchmarks. Here we’re talking about complex reasoning (Humanity’s Last Exam), human preference tests (LMArena), ARC-AGI-2 problem-solving, multimodal understanding of images and video, factual accuracy (SimpleQA Verified), and software-engineering performance (WebDev Arena).
As reported, this led OpenAI’s CEO to declare “code red” in his internal memo earlier this week. Now, OpenAI appears to be ready to give it back to Google with a new model, the GPT-5.2. Today, Tom Warren from The Verge reported that OpenAI’s GPT-5.2 model could launch as early as next week, on December 9th.
According to Warren’s source, the next update will be on par with Google’s new model. That’s not all; the competitive threat posed by Gemini 3 (Review) is reportedly prompting OpenAI to launch the GPT-5.2 update earlier than planned. Per the report, the company had plans to push the update later in December.
All that said, there’s no official confirmation as of now. Do note that the release date might shift a bit because OpenAI factors in multiple things before pushing its new products.
That being said, it’s safe to assume that this early launch is part of the “code-red” call Altman issued to its staff after Google’s drop. Wondering what else is on Altman’s plan to catch up with Google and Anthropic? Well, the company is also delaying its other initiatives, such as rolling out ads in ChatGPT and improvements to AI agents related to health and shopping queries. Speaking of delays, the company might also take its time rolling out improvements to ChatGPT Pulse, launched back in September.
