Meta Unveils New AI Glasses with a Built-in Display and Neural Band

Key Highlights-

  • Meta just launched its new Ray-Ban smart glasses with a built-in display and AI-powered features that can be controlled with a Neural Band wristband.
  • The glasses, priced at $799, use electromyography (EMG) to read subtle muscle signals from the user’s wrist and hand, enabling a new form of hands-free control.

Meta has announced a new generation of its Ray-Ban smart glasses that for the first time include a built-in display and a wristband for hands-free control. The new Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, priced at $799, were unveiled at the company’s “Connect” event as a major step toward its vision of a more immersive AI experience.

The centerpiece of the new glasses is a small, full-color display projected onto the inside of the right lens, which can show messages, notifications, and visual responses from Meta AI. The glasses are controlled with the new Meta Neural Band, a wristband that uses electromyography (EMG) to detect barely perceptible gestures and muscle movements in the user’s wrist and hand. This allows wearers to navigate content, check messages, and respond to prompts without using voice commands or touching the glasses.

Meta Ray-Ban Glasses All New Features

The glasses offer a range of new AI-powered features, including real-time translation, live captions, and navigation with turn-by-turn directions. Users can also make and receive calls, and send messages through popular apps like WhatsApp and Instagram.

A new Oakley Meta Vanguard model, priced at $499, was also announced for athletes, with integrations for fitness trackers like Garmin and Strava.

Zuckerberg’s AI Glasses Demo Goes Awry

During the event CEO Mark Zuckerberg attempted to show off hands-free calling through the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses which did not go as planned. After failing to take the video call three times, he told the audience “I don’t know what to tell you guys. We will go to the next thing and hope that will work.”

The audience however, supported the billionaire with cheers and enthusiasm. You can have a look at the incident here –

Meta was among the first few to create smart glasses, following closely after Google Glasses tried to create some hype in the market. The tech giant now competes with other contenders such as Google, Samsung, Snap etc., in the wearable market landscape.

This new product launch comes as Meta, along with other major tech companies, faces growing scrutiny from regulators over the safety of its AI products, particularly for minors. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently launched a sweeping inquiry into AI chatbots that are designed to act as companions to children and teens. The inquiry, as reported in a previous article, seeks to understand how companies like Meta, Google, and OpenAI are testing for potential harm and what safeguards they have in place to protect young users from negative interactions. The timing of the FTC’s investigation highlights the increasing pressure on tech companies to balance innovation with user safety as AI becomes more deeply integrated into daily life.
