Key Highlights:
- Google’s VP of Global Ads, Dan Taylor, denies AdWeek’s exclusive report where it claimed that the company is planning to show ads inside Gemini starting 2026.
- AdLiaison confirms ads are only in AI Overviews and ongoing AI Mode tests.
- OpenAI has also reportedly dropped plans to bring ads into ChatGPT and focusing on making its model better, citing threats posed by rivals.
Google has been heavily criticized for sprinkling sponsored results across search results. No doubt, ads are one of the major driving forces of any company’s revenue. But when ads start getting in the way of how a user uses a product or service, things start to get annoying. Let’s be honest, we all hate ads, and when a new report circulated yesterday claiming that Google is mulling over the idea of showing ads in Gemini tools, people were furious. But Google was quick to respond and refuted those claims.
An exclusive report by AdWeek stirred the confusion
Yesterday, a report from AdWeek claims that Google has “told advertising clients” about its plans to inject ads into “its AI chatbot Gemini” sometime next year. The exact month or date wasn’t mentioned in the report, but it’s different than what Google has confirmed to be testing inside AI Mode.
After reactions from Gemini users poured in, Google’s VP of Global Ads, Dan Taylor, posted a tweet saying that “there are no ads in the Gemini app, and there are no current plans to change that.” Taking a direct aim, Taylor blasts the report for reporting information based on what he calls “uninformed, anonymous sources who are making inaccurate claims.”
Meanwhile, Google’s AdLiaison account also shared Taylor’s tweet and reconfirmed that “there are no ads in the Gemini app, and there are no current plans to change that. Ads are available in AI Overviews in the US and are expanding to more English-speaking countries. We continue to test ads in AI Mode.”
Gemini 3 is reportedly posing real threat to OpenAI
Google has been upgrading Gemini to stay in the AI race, and it’s paying well for the company. The recently launched Gemini 3 model recently wowed OpenAI’s CEO, at the same time, making him worried about Google’s comeback in the AI race. And that’s why the CEO initiated a company-wide “code red” call to focus primarily on making ChatGPT better.
Not to forget, OpenAI is reportedly also planning to release GPT-5.2 today to tackle the threat posed by the recently launched Gemini 3 models. If the model goes live, you’ll get all the information here on TimesOfAI. Stay tuned!!!
