Google has introduced new AI features for its proprietary web browser, Chrome for making user experience much “safer” and “more productive” than before. Claiming to be one of the biggest updates yet, the tech giant is integrating its AI features across multiple levels.

The new update encompasses AI mode, agentic browsing and more, of which you can learn below.

Chrome’s New Agentic Browsing Feature

The main highlight of the update is the ‘agentic AI capabilities‘ in Chrome. Powered by Gemini, Google assures that users would save time with tedious tasks like booking a haircut, ordering groceries etc. be taken care of via this new feature. In terms of ‘safety’ Google says the user would be given the autonomous choice to stop any task which agent will be execurting at any time and that they will be “in control.” Here’s a glimpse of it in action.

The agentic browsing feature will take a few months before rolling out, however this isn’t the first time a tech giant has attempted to introduce “Agentic” features into a browser. AI giant Perplexity launched an agentic browser Comet, which was followed by Anthropic launching its own Claude for Chrome extension. The latter, however, shared its reservations when it comes to safety and warned users beforehand, something which we haven’t seen from Google.

Other Integrated Gemini Features

Google is rolling out ‘Gemini in Chrome’ feature both to Mac and Windows desktop users with initial release starting with the U.S. Users will be required to set the language to English, so as to use it. It’ll be available to businesses in the coming weeks via Google Workspace with enterprise-grade data protections and controls.

In this feature, Gemini will be able to read the webpage (or webpages) on screen and user could clear any complex doubts required from it. This feature will also roll out to organisations and businesses via Google Workspace with the usual data protection and control features.

This will also debut on both platforms, and Android users can activate Gemini using Chrome or other apps, by simply holding the power button. For iOS, Gemini in Chrome will be built directly into the app.

Gemini can now also be used to “recall” through your history by simply talking to the AI chatbot. Users can try prompts like “what was the website that I saw the walnut desk on last week?” or “what was that blog I read on back to school shopping?”

Users will also be able to use the Google Search’s AI Mode, right from Chrome address bar which Google has called “omnibox.” Users can ask unusually long complex questions using the AI Mode and followup thereafter, giving a rather Perplexity like vibe. This update will be rolling out later this month in English in the U.S. and expanding to more countries and languages in the weeks ahead. You can read more about this feature in the official blog.
