Gemini may soon let you import notebooks from NotebookLM

Google Gemini 2.0 Can Erase Watermarks; Sparks Controversy

Key Highlights:

  • A new report hints that Google is preparing to integrate NotebookLM import within Gemini.
  • A new “openNotebookLMImport” code refrence hint at attachment menu-like option for easily accessing notebooks inside Gemini.
  • The feature is still in early development, with no clarity yet on how the import flow will work.

Google’s NotebookLM is by far the best thing that anyone dealing around bunch of sources could have asked for. It just takes a few seconds (and a few minutes for Audio and Video Overviews) for the tool to pull from at least 50 different sources and provide you with presentable slides and much more. Now, Google appears to be preparing yet another integration within the Gemini ecosystem, and this time it’s all about NotebookLM.

Gemini and NotebookLM integration traces found in codes

The news comes via TestingCatalog, which reported that in the recent code changes, it found a new reference, “openNotebookLMImport“. From what’s mentioned on the code, it’s a clear indication that Gemini will soon let you import notebooks directly. And honestly, this feels like Google is finally trying to make the whole Gemini and NotebookLM integration a lot more seamless.

The new option might mimic Attachments menu, which currently allows you to add photos, upload files, or drop in bits of code. Google might add a new “notebook import” option alongside these. Therefore, instead of juggling between NotebookLM and Gemini, you may soon be able to pull your notebooks straight into the chat interface and start working with them instantly.

It’s unclear how the import function will work as of now

As of now, it’s unclear how exactly the import flow will function, as it’s still in the form of code reference. But the idea is pretty promising. If you’re someone who stores research, structured notes, or detailed sources inside NotebookLM, having them show up natively inside Gemini could seriously cut down a lot of hassle. This could end up being a massive upgrade for researchers, journalists, students, and anyone who constantly jumps between Gemini and NotebookLM for their work.

Google has been busy lately pushing a few new features to Gemini, and this feature fits right into that push. It feels like by allowing users work with NotebookLM content directly inside Gemini, Google wants to build a more unified workflow, which users have been wanting for a long time now. Since the feature is still in development, it’s safe to say that Google will take some more time before it rolls the feature out to masses.
