Apple’s First Ever Foldable iPhone Might Not Release This Year; Here’s Why

Apples-Foldable-Iphone-Faces-Technical-Issues-delaying-launch
  • Apple’s first foldable iPhone has emerged through multiple leaks highlighting a book style design and a strong focus on durability and display quality.
  • It is expected to be announced in 2026 but there are chances of delay because of supply chain issues.
  • Apple’s main focus is on engineering perfection, especially crease reduction and smoother hinge reliability over speeding to launch it in the market.

Apple’s long awaited entry into the foldable smartphone race so far is less about a flashy launch and more about careful engineering for better reliability. Recent reports from sources like Reuters and Nikkei Asia suggest that the company is currently deep in the development phase, they’re working through technical challenges that have slowed the progress. Apple appears to be taking a more conscious route aiming to refine the category instead of simply joining the rush unlike other competitors.

Reason Behind the Delay

The biggest factor behind the delay is engineering complexity. Apple is struggling to meet its own high standards in a few key areas since foldable smartphones characteristically bring structural and durability changes.

One major issue is the hinge reliability. It is challenging creating a hinge which is both slim and durable over years of use. Folding the hinge needs to feel smooth and consistent while also ensuring that loosening or degrading is not an issue to avoid repeated stress. This makes it even more complicated to align with Apple’s goal of making the device slimmer than most existing foldables.

Another challenge faced by Apple is the display itself. Competitors have not yet fully achieved the ‘nearly invisible’ crease, Apple is said to be working towards it. Minimizing the crease requires precise engineering and advanced materials, especially to maintain the display quality over time. This is notably one of the hardest problems to solve as even slight imperfections tend to magnify in a foldable screen.

Reports indicate that production rates for certain components may not be high enough for mass production yet which explains the broader manufacturing concerns. So, even if Apple decides to announce the device in 2026, actual shipments could either be limited or just simply pushed further into 2027.

Expected Features and Design

Despite the delays, leaks from various sources have provided a somewhat detailed picture of the foldable iPhone’s features and design. Apple seems to go with the book-style design similar to Samsung’s foldable devices but with its own enhancements.

In terms of hardware and design, you can expect:

  • A large inner display, around 7.5 inches that gives off a tablet-like experience.
  • A smaller outer display, around 5.25 inches for regular smartphone use.
  • A premium titanium and advanced alloys build.
  • A hinge system redesigned to focus on durability and smooth motion.

Its features include:

  • A shift to side-mounted Touch ID instead of a Face ID, mostly due to space and design limitations.
  • A more conservative dual-camera setup instead of a complex multi-lens system.
  • A larger battery to support dual displays and extended usage.

Talking about the software, the device is expected to feature an iOS version specifically optimized for multitasking. This could mean enabling split screen apps and a more productivity-focused experience when the device gets unfolded.

Wrapping Up

Apple’s foldable iPhone is developing to be a calculated entry into an evolving market rather than a rushed innovation. The delay is notable but it reflects the company’s efforts to address the same issues (durability, display quality, and long-term usability) that have restricted the appeal of foldables so far.

Apple could redefine expectations for foldable devices if it succeeds. But that success heavily relies on whether the company is able to overcome its ongoing engineering issues without compromising the usual Apple standards. For now, the foldable iPhone remains unfinished but promising, it may arrive a little later but will be more polished than any foldable device before it.
