Walmart Now Allows You To Shop Using ChatGPT

Walmart OpenAI partnership

Key Highlights:

  • You can now shop for any product in Walmart using the ChatGPT app.
  • It is designed to help users make informed decisions about their purchases.

Walmart has announced a new partnership with OpenAI to bring an AI-first shopping experience. Customers can now place orders for any product available in Walmart directly in ChatGPT and pay using instant checkout. The feature also allows users to discuss their needs with ChatGPT to search for a specific item, and compare them before making the purchase.

ChatGPT can now do more than just talking

Walmart says that its collboration with OpenAI shifts the retail shopping experience from reactive to proactive. It is deisgned to help users find the perfect product for their requirements, which can be discussed in detail using ChatGPT’s advanced logical and reasoning abilities. Customers will be able to make more informed decisions, and this may also reduce impulsive purchases.

For example, if you are looking to shop for healthy and high-protein foods, you can now ask the chatbot to find the best food items to meet your protein and dietary requirements. If you provide additonal information like your height, weight, and workout schedule, ChatGPT can generate a detailed diet plan for your body, based on the best products available in stock in Walmart. If you are allergic to something, the chatbot can also avoid certain items, and also warn you if a specific food product carries a risk of any allergic reacton.

The applications of using AI in shopping are endless. From finding out the perfect specifications for an electronic appliance, to even using ChatGPT’s image generation abilities to try out clothes, shoes, and other fashion others, it completely transforms the way we shop.

Walmart has officially announced this feature on its website. However, the company has not shared the exact rollout date for the same. We can expect it to be rolled out across the United States by the end of this week.

Stay vigilant with what you share with ChatGPT

The concept of being able to order something from a chatbot sounds cool and futuristic, but it carries some equivalent risks. It has been noticed that people end up sharing way too much information with ChatGPT, to an extent where OpenAI ends up knowing about your personal behaviour a little too much.

As a hypothectical example, lets assume you told ChatGPT that you had a rough day, and have run out of your favourite drink to relax. What if, the chatbot picks it up as an instruction, places an order for your drink, and it gets delivered to your doorstep without you realising. It may sound vague, but ChatGPT is known to hallucinate at times, as is the nature of any machine learning based chatbot. However, with instant checkout, we cannot rule out, and this could become a major risk.

If you decide to link your ChatGPT account with Walmart, along with payments options, then you should remain highly careful with what you share with the chatbot. Although OpenAI has a robust privacy poilicy, this technology is something that is not worth risking.

In related news, Sam Altman has also announced that the company will be rolling out a new version of ChatGPT with a better personality. Since the rollout of GPT-5, many users complained that the responses became too artificial, and the chatbot lost its personal touch. OpenAI said that the company deliberately nerfed its chatbot to protect people with mental health issues, but it also made the experience less enjoyable for regular users.

You will soon get an option to ask ChatGPT to have more personality, similar to that of GPT-4o. OpenAI is also working to bring a feature where ChatGPT will treat adult users as adult, allowing them to discuss about matured content, but only after age verification.
