Meta AI’s Division Gets Fourth Big Shake Up

Meta AI's Division Gets Fourth Big Shake Up

Key Highlights

  • Meta has reportedly reorganized its AI division for the fourth time in the last six months
  • Mark Zuckerberg splits the AI division into four specialized teams to pursue AGI development
  • The changes and the high-cost hiring of new employees from competitors are causing internal conflicts

Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, is making big changes to its artificial intelligence (AI) team. This is the fourth time they have changed this team in just six months. The team is now called Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL).

CEO Mark Zuckerberg, wants Meta to lead the AI race, with the aim to reach at the next stage in AI called Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

According to the latest report, the team is now split into four smaller groups. One group will work on new ideas that have not yet been  decided. Another group will work on the Meta AI assistant product. A third group will take care of the computers and buildings that the AI needs. The last group will do research on AI for the future.

These changes show that Meta is trying very hard to compete with other companies in the fast-moving AI industry like OpenAI and DeepSeek, while also dealing with its own internal problems.

The choice to change the team comes at a time when the company is spending a lot of money and employees are unhappy. Meta is putting a huge amount of money into AI.

This year, the company plans to spend between $66 and $72 billion. This includes a $29 billion deal to pay for a giant new data center in Louisiana. A data center is a building with many powerful computers. These investments are meant to build the strong systems needed for AGI.

Zuckerberg says he wants to create “superintelligence for everyone,” which means AI that can think better than humans. However, all this spending is creating financial pressure. Employee pay costs are going up because Meta is aggressively hiring the best AI experts from other companies like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.

For example, in June 2025, Meta bought another company called Scale AI for $14.3 billion. This deal brought a new leader, Alexandr Wang, to Meta, along with other top researchers who helped create famous AI like ChatGPT.

Meta AI Suffers Internal Conflicts

These new hires often get a high salary, which is paid in millions of dollars. This has caused some anger among the existing workers, who feel their own work is not appreciated or that they are being ignored.
Now, the company is changing its mind. The company is now planning to keep its new AI technology secret for itself or use technology from other companies.
Also, the latest version of its AI, called Llama 4, failed to attract attention in the community. There was also a problem when Meta’s AI chatbot started having strange and inappropriate conversations with people.
The company might fire some people or move them to different jobs. This is part of a larger trend at Meta. In February 2025, the company cut 3,600 jobs, which was 5% of all its workers worldwide.
This was called the “Year of Efficiency.” These job cuts were for people who were not performing well. But at the same time, Meta is hiring new people in important areas like machine learning.
Some researchers have even said that they will quit and join its rival labs if things go south.
Amid the boom in the sector, the race to hire the best talents has become very intense. It is reported that Mark Zuckerberg has offered signing bonuses of up to $100 million to convince top experts to come work for Meta.
Even with all these difficulties, the leaders at the company are still dedicated to their AI goal. Yann LeCun, the chief scientist for the research group, continues to lead studies for the future. Another leader, Shengjia Zhao, decides what the main AI lab should research.
Mark Zuckerberg’s main goal is to create personal AI assistants for more than a billion people by the year 2025. He believes this will change how people use computers and technology.
However, experts are not sure if spending so much on AI makes sense for a social media company like Meta. There are also dangers related to ethics and government rules. Meta is being investigated because of its AI chatbots and people are worried about its open-source AI models being used for unjust purposes.
For instance, A 76-year-old American man died in an accident after attempting to meet Big Sis Billie, a Meta AI chatbot that convinced him it was a real person. With this, the AI concerns get real, and on this even Microsoft AI Chief added his own fears. You can read about it here.
