CEO Mark Zuckerberg, wants Meta to lead the AI race, with the aim to reach at the next stage in AI called Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
According to the latest report, the team is now split into four smaller groups. One group will work on new ideas that have not yet been decided. Another group will work on the Meta AI assistant product. A third group will take care of the computers and buildings that the AI needs. The last group will do research on AI for the future.
These changes show that Meta is trying very hard to compete with other companies in the fast-moving AI industry like OpenAI and DeepSeek, while also dealing with its own internal problems.
The choice to change the team comes at a time when the company is spending a lot of money and employees are unhappy. Meta is putting a huge amount of money into AI.
This year, the company plans to spend between $66 and $72 billion. This includes a $29 billion deal to pay for a giant new data center in Louisiana. A data center is a building with many powerful computers. These investments are meant to build the strong systems needed for AGI.
Zuckerberg says he wants to create “superintelligence for everyone,” which means AI that can think better than humans. However, all this spending is creating financial pressure. Employee pay costs are going up because Meta is aggressively hiring the best AI experts from other companies like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.
For example, in June 2025, Meta bought another company called Scale AI for $14.3 billion. This deal brought a new leader, Alexandr Wang, to Meta, along with other top researchers who helped create famous AI like ChatGPT.
